Betula lenta - Black or Sweet Birch

Leaves, twigs and catkins are difficult to distinguish visually from Yellow Birch.
Also, twigs of both species have the wintergreen taste.
The character of the mature bark distinguishes Black Birch from Yellow Birch in the field.
