INTERNSHIPS
Department of History
Bloomsburg University
The Department of History at Bloomsburg
University offers a well developed internship program that can provide students
with on-the-job experience, as well as college credit. Many of the sites
recently visited by students even offer paid internships.
If you would like to acquire valuable professional experience, you should
consider an internship in history. The course under which you would enroll
is entitled "Internship in History" (42.497). Internships can be
taken for up to twelve (12) hours of academic credit. Three (3) of those credits can be
applied to the "F" category in the departmental requirements (300/400
history electives). Additional credit hours can be applied in the general
elective slots on the curriculum guide.
A student may undertake an internship as early as his or her sophomore
year. Eligible students must be in good academic standing in the
Department of History, and must have completed the course entitled
"Research and Writing in History" (42.398).
Internships can involve part-time or full-time employment. As a general
rule, forty hours of leaning experience on the job serves to generate one
academic internship credit.
Internship alone does not prepare one of a
profession, but it can be an important, practical part of collegiate
training. Many interns are eventually hired by their sponsoring
employers. Others are hired through contacts made outside the internship
site but during the internship experience. But whatever the case, students
who have had internships generally have better credentials and experience for
the job market; they receive more promotions after they are hired; and they are
more likely to be retained at their places of employment. Through the
hands-on experience of internship, students also learn how to effectively
utilize the skills they have refined in their history program.
For the student who excels at research, analysis, organization, interpretation,
and presentation of historical information, numerous internship opportunities
exist. Click on the link here to locate a list of
internships in which Bloomsburg history students have been engaged in recent
