SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY
BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY
The Department of History offers scholarships and
academic awards to exceptionally qualified students. These awards are made
possible by the generosity of our donors. The exact amount of each award
varies by year, depending upon the performance of university investments.
All scholarship applicants for funds identified below must submit the standard
Bloomsburg University Scholarship Application, which can be picked up in the
offices of the Department of History (in Old Science Hall), or at the Financial
Aid Office (in the Student Services Center).
The James R. Sperry Award:
This is the most prestigious award given by the Department of
History at Bloomsburg University. It recognizes the outstanding graduating
senior each academic year, and is awarded on the basis of overall academic
performance, commitment to humanistic learning, and service to the Department.
The Mary A. Moore Taubel Scholarships:
Mary A. Moore Taubel Alumni Newsletter Scholarship
(one award). The
recipient of this scholarship makes a semester-long commitment, guided by a
faculty advisor, to the composition of the alumni newsletter published by the
Department of History. Applicants must be history majors in the College of
Liberal Arts, must have a 3.0 grade point average overall (and 3.25 in history),
must have completed 21 credit hours in history courses, and must have either
junior or senior status during the semester in which the award is granted.
Preference is given to students who have completed 42.398 (Research and Writing)
or an equivalent upper-division, writing-intensive course. Application
requires a writing sample: a five-hundred (500) word essay explaining the
applicant's qualifications and vision for the newsletter. Candidates must
also solicit letters of recommendation from two different faculty members in the
Department of History. The recipient
will solicit news from alumni, students and faculty, and will coordinate
composition, duplication, and mailing of the newsletter.
Mary A. Moore Taubel Senior Scholarships (two or three
awards). Applicants must be history majors in the College of Liberal Arts,
must have a 3.0 grade point average overall (and 3.25 in history), and must have
earned 75 credit hours overall (21 in history) at the time of application.
Candidates for these scholarships must submit a research paper on an historical
topic of their choice. Candidates must also solicit letters of
recommendation from two different faculty members in the Department of History.
Mary A. Moore Taubel Junior Scholarships (one or two
awards). Applicants must be history majors in the College of Liberal Arts,
must have a 3.0 grade point average overall (and 3.25 in history), and must have
earned 40 credit hours overall (9 in history) at the time of application.
Candidates must also solicit letters of recommendation from two different
faculty members in the Department of History.
Mary A. Moore Taubel Sophomore Scholarships (one or two
awards). Applicants must be history majors in the College of Liberal Arts,
must have a 3.0 grade point average overall (and 3.25 in history), and must have
earned 15 credit hours overall (3 in history) at the time of application.
Candidates must also solicit one letter of recommendation from a faculty member
in the Department of History.
William A. Turnbach Scholarship (one
award). One award is given to a major in history, OR in a foreign language
(including American Sign Language). Junior or senior status in the
semester of award payment is required. Priority is given to graduates of
Hazleton Area or West Hazleton High Schools, or Bishop Hafey High School.
If no graduate from these schools qualifies, graduates from Weatherly High
School, Freeland Mining and Technical Institute, Tamaqua, Marian Catholic, Jim
Thorpe, Panther Valley, and Pottsville High Schools, and Nativity BVM, will be
considered.
John J. Serff Sr. Memorial Scholarship (one award).
Erma M. Hefferan Scholarship (one or two awards).
Erma M. Hefferan Study Abroad Scholarship (one award).
