Who is eligible to participate in a Study Abroad program?
In order to apply, you must fill the following requirements:
- Enrolled as a full-time student
- A sophomore or junior class standing
- Good academic standing with Bloomsburg University
- Most institutions require a GPA of 2.5 or above

What are the different types of programs I might consider for study abroad?
- Exchange Program - equal exchange. BU student goes abroad and pays BU tuition and foreign student comes to BU paying home institution's tuition. Room/board fees are paid directly to host institution.
- Non BU Exchange - Sponsored by universities abroad, international organizations, or US colleges and universities. Student applies directly to program.
- Direct Enrollment - Student applies directly to host university - student should be independent, and should be proficient in language of country. Can be the least expensive way to study abroad.

As an exchange student seeking to study abroad, students pay Bloomsburg University tuition fees, most institutions; room and board fees are paid to visiting school, room and board is approximately the same cost as BU, most institutions; meals are paid to visiting school or students may prepare their own meals, and additional costs include round-trip airfare and personal spending money.

I am on financial aid - can I use this to help pay for study abroad?
In most cases, Financial Aid is Transferable. Make an appointment with the BU Financial Aid office.
What is mandatory as a study abroad student?
Must provide proof of health insurance that applies to countries other than the US or you will be required to obtain coverage.
How long is a study abroad program?
Normally study abroad is one to two semesters. Each institution and agreement varies.
If I study overseas, will I be able to graduate in 4 years?
Study abroad is not considered a "break" or "time out" from your regular academic program. If you choose your program and courses carefully with your advisor(s), you can expect to receive sufficient academic credit so that you will continue in your progress toward graduating on time.
Do I need to speak a foreign language in order to study abroad?
Many study abroad programs and opportunities exist in English speaking countries. There are also programs in non-English speaking countries offering course instruction in English or at various levels in the native language which best meet a student's language proficiency.
What majors can you study abroad?
Any major can study overseas. Many study abroad programs are comprehensive universities offering courses in all disciplines, so that anyone can find courses in their major/minor fields.
When should I start making study abroad arrangements?
The earlier you begin to research and plan, the better prepared and informed you will be to study abroad. |
