"My parents have worked and saved my whole life to be able to support me and my (expensive) dreams of going to college and studying abroad in a Spanish-speaking country," says Abigail, adding that the expenses were daunting.
Thanks to the support of the Phillip N. Stan, III & Andrea McHugh Study Abroad/Internship Scholarship, Abigail had the opportunity to study in Argentina over the summer. "Being awarded this scholarship and being able to help my parents with the financial burden is a feeling that is truly priceless."
The experience proved to be not only academically beneficial, but personally enriching as well. A Spanish and Audiology/Speech-Language Pathology dual major, Abigail says the experience strengthened her confidence and skills with the Spanish language and has heightened her sense of cultural awareness. "Both of these skill sets will be crucial after my graduation from Bloomsburg; not only when I attend grad school for Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology, but also for when I begin to practice in the field. I plan to provide speech services for both the English and Spanish speaking populations. My strengthened Spanish knowledge and awareness to cultural differences will help me to be a leader in a very small field of work that is ever-expanding." With the scholarship support, Abigail was able to fund her study abroad experience without adding debt.
"Being chosen to receive such a generous scholarship was truly a great honor. I come from a home where both of my parents did not have the financial ability/situations to attend college, not to mention travel outside of the country." Scholarships like the Phillip N. Stan, III & Andrea McHugh Study Abroad/Internship Scholarship provide experiential learning opportunities for BU students, like Abigail, that will impact them for the rest of their lives.
