For many years, East Asia has been leading the world in economic growth and has become a driving force in the Asia-Pacific Region and the world. China, with its vast territory, its 1.2 billion people, and its double digit GDP growth rate over the past fi ve years, has become the biggest market in Asia and in the world as well. China's growing foreign trade will generate business opportunities worth $700 billion between now and the year 2000.

Leading American companies such as Coca Cola, IBM, GM, Motorola, etc., have settled down in China and are playing a more and more important role in China's economy. Coca Cola, for example, has occupied 70% of China's soft drink market. Motorola is China 's leading cell phone and pager supplier. More and more medium and small size companies have also started to enter the China market.
Chinese Learning on the Rise
According to statistics of the Modern Language Association, Chinese enrollment at college level has increased by 35.8% over the past five years, the highest growth rate in foreign language enrollment. Many schools previously without Chinese programs are starting Chinese programs, believing that a good Chinese education will give students an edge in the competitive market. Enrollment in Chinese courses at Bloomsburg University has significantly increased as well. The Asian Language and Culture Club, formed by BU students, has been active in sponsoring cultural activities.
