Hunters’ Safety
Students provide health screening and education each fall for hunters. Health screenings include blood pressure, glucose, pulmonary function, and body mass index screenings. Participants also undergo electrocardiogram. Students provide education regarding healthy lifestyle practices and warning signs of stroke and heart attack.
Flu Shot Clinics
Students participate in flu shot clinics scheduled on campus and in the community. Students learn how a community program works. They provide health education related to maintaining wellness during flu season.
Area Agency on Aging Fall Festival
Students provide a variety of health screenings for senior citizens from a five-county area. Services also include immunizations and health promotion for men and women from the surrounding area.
Breathing Club
This program is designed to improve breathing capacity and well-being among persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). An advanced practice nurse faculty member provides health teaching and assessment for people with COPD.
Diabetes Program
A nurse practitioner faculty member offers health teaching and assistance with disease management for uninsured and underinsured members of a rural community. This program is supported by the local community hospital.
Migrant Health Program
The Nursing Wellness Center provides outreach for migrant workers. Outreach includes health screening, health teaching, treatment for uncomplicated ailments, and referral for diagnostic evaluation and special care. Students are encouraged to participate in the program to enhance cultural sensitivity.
