Welcome back psychology majors and minors! The Psychology Association has a lot of exciting events planned for this semester, and we hope that you will be joining us for as many of the activities as possible.
We are looking for a team of very energetic and creative officers! If you are interested in taking on the roles and responsibilities of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, or Community Outreach Officer, please see Dr. Duncan (2111 MCHS) during office hours (TR 9:00-9:30 a.m. or Monday 1-4 p.m.) by Friday, April 4th.
Membership fees are $6 for the Spring semester if you have not already paid for the entire year. Payment of membership fees will ensure that your membership in this organization is officially documented on your co-curricular transcript. Your membership entitles you to participate in ALL Psychology Association-related activities.
During the fall semester, we explored issues related to obtaining an advanced degree in Psychology (i.e., preparing for graduate school). We discussed admission criteria for graduate schools and how to meet them during your undergraduate training, types of graduate programs in psychology, applying for graduate school (e.g., writing a personal statement, creating a CV, requesting letters of recommendation, interviewing), taking the GREs, and other relevant topics as per our members’ requests.
Our focus this Spring is on careers in Psychology. We will devote much of the semester to learning about the broad range of professional opportunities within the discipline of Psychology and in related fields of study and practice. We will invite child life specialists, school psychologists, guidance counselors, social workers, industrial/organizational psychologists and many other community professionals to campus to share their academic and professional experiences with you.
In service to the Department of Psychology and through the generosity of the President’s Fund for Academic Initiatives, the Association will be creating a Psychology Advisement Library to be housed in our department for use by psychology majors and minors. The development of this library will require that we form three committees to perform three separate, though complementary, tasks. First, we will identify and acquire books and journal articles related to the stated objectives of the Psychology Association (i.e., preparing for graduate school, preparing for careers in psychology, and promoting students’ interest in psychology). Second, we will assist Dr. Mason in the creation of an Alumni Networking website so that current students and previous students may form and nurture collaborative contacts. Third, we will acquire and organize updated information packets from regional and national psychology and psychology-related graduate programs across a broad range of areas of specialization.
Also, in service to the Department of Psychology, the Psychology Association will be creating a much-needed group of volunteer tutors/mentors. If you are comfortable with your knowledge of basic statistics, experimental methods, OR experimental applications, please contact Dr. Duncan at mduncan@bloomu.edu.
In terms of community outreach projects, we will continue our commitment to the Ronald McDonald House of Danville, a home-away-from-home for families of children who are hospitalized or receiving outpatient care for cancer or other serious illnesses. From time to time throughout the semester, Psychology Association members will prepare a meal for the House’s guests.
Given that the Association’s mission is to nurture healthy help-giving relationships between Psychology students and the faculty within our department and to support students’ awareness of the department’s course requirements and policies, we will be hosting a faculty-student meet-and-greet as well as a mandatory mass advising meeting.
We are always looking for creative ways to raise funds for trips to local and regional professional and research conferences. These trips provide awesome opportunities to learn about areas of research and study within the field of Psychology and to meet faculty and students from regional colleges and universities who share your academic and professional interests. This Spring, the Psychology Department is funding the registration, travel, and lodging of student presenters and non-presenters at the Eastern Psychological Association’s annual conference to be held in Boston, MA from March 13 through the 16th.
The Psychology Association engages in fundraising activities that are purposeful and beneficial to the entire student body. For example, under the guidance of Dr. Marion Mason, we offer a Practice GRE exam every semester for a nominal fee of $10.00. Students from every major are welcome to participate. We also will develop and sell mock final exams for General Psychology students at the end of the semester. The cost is $3.00 per exam or $5.00 for two different versions.
I look forward to getting to know you through your participation in the Psychology Association. I am certain that you will find that your membership is not only good fun but also greatly rewarding.
Sincerely,
Dr. Mary Katherine Duncan
