The SMP is for Army Reserve (USAR) and Army National Guard (ARNG) Soldiers who would like to attend college and participate in Army ROTC while continuing to serve as a USAR or ARNG Soldier.
An SMP Soldier/cadet contracts with Army ROTC at the beginning of his/her junior year. The SMP cadet trains with both BU Army ROTC and with his/her USAR or ARNG unit. BU Army ROTC is the SMP cadet’s place of duty, so ROTC training takes precedence over unit training when there is a conflict. An SMP cadet may sometimes receive credit for ROTC training within his/her unit contingent upon his/her commander’s approval.
The SMP is very advantageous for Soldiers working to become a Commissioned Officer because it gives them the opportunity to see first-hand what a lieutenant does and what responsibilities one has. Instead of conducting Soldier tasks during a USAR or ARNG weekend drill session, an SMP cadet normally shadows a lieutenant and serves as an apprentice to that lieutenant.
Contact the BU Army ROTC Enrollment Officer or your unit’s Officer Strength Manager for more information about the SMP.
