Mission Statement

To promote diversity, inclusion, and the acceptance of individual rights for all members of the University community, while creating a climate of respect and trust for the dignity and self-worth of all human beings.

Goals

  • Attract a diverse population of faculty and staff members.
  • Promote a campus climate of inclusiveness and respect through collaboration and educational programming with campus constituencies.
  • Enhance civility through conflict resolution and mediation initiatives.
  • Confront discriminatory and harassment actions through due process investigations.

Why Diversity

Societal changes are occurring at an accelerating pace. These changes have affected and will continue to impact the economic, political, and social environments of the Commonwealth and the nation. All University students must be prepared to live and work in this increasingly diverse society.

Persons of color, women, the disabled, and other historically under-represented individuals continue to comprise a larger segment of the labor market and the general population. To meet these essential societal needs, the University will increase the participation of historically under-represented individuals on campus so all students have the skills and knowledge to contribute to state and national societies and economies. Most importantly, diversity on campus helps students, faculty, and staff members to develop an awareness and value the richness of diversity.

The University also supports diversity because it is the right thing to do. As an institution of Higher Education, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania encourages an understanding and appreciation of people whose ideas and practices should be included rather than excluded. The University serves the needs of all students. To achieve this goal, the University assertively recruits and strives to retain students, faculty, and staff members from historically under-represented populations.
