SSS
How did it all begin?

Student Support Services was initially funded at Bloomsburg University in September, 1997. For our first four years on campus, our office was located just off the lobby in Elwell Hall while we awaited completion of the Student Services Center. Four staff members shared one small office adjoining the residence hall computer lab. By the time we received the long-awaited news of our move to the Student Services Center, boxes were piled high with files and resource materials and there was barely enough room to get our legs under the desks. The Elwell lounges and laundry room served as makeshift tutoring and advisement areas. Evening tutorials were held in the basement lounge of Lycoming Hall, where all tutors and students worked in the same room often at the same conference table.

In February 2001, we were delighted to move to our spacious private offices in the new Student Services Center. Most of you now involved in SSS don’t remember the Elwell days. But these pictures bring back memories for those of us who were here and may give you some idea of the contrast between then and now.

The move to the new offices in SSC has allowed us to enhance services to students: we now have private rooms for each tutor during the evening tutorial lab which creates a quiet, nurturing area for learning; additional office space and computers are now available for student use throughout the day and some evenings; each staff member has a private office for student contacts to ensure confidentiality and promote

SSS is starting our third four year grant cycle on September 1, 2005. We are looking forward to working with students still on the path to graduation as well as welcoming new students to SSS.
