The residential summer program combines concentrated academic work plus structured and optional recreational activities, both on and off campus at Bloomsburg University. Daily activities during the week consist of mandatory morning classes and elective afternoon classes. The classroom work addresses academic weakness or enrichment and attempts to prepare the student for the next school year. TRiO Upward Bound seniors who are planning to attend college receive college-oriented instruction to aid them in adjusting to college life. Summer 2009 academic courses included: Algebra I & II, Biology I & II, Calculus, Chemistry, College & Career Success, Communication Skills, Cultures, Geometry, Physics, PSSA Prep, Reading, SAT Prep, Science Seminar, Senior Seminar, Spanish, Trigonometry and Writing.
In addition to AM academic classes, students choose afternoon courses from a variety of offerings. Summer 2009 elective classes included: Creative Writing, Criminal Justice, Hoop Dreams (basketball), Motivate U, Nursing 101, Nutrition Walking, Outdoor Explore, Rugby Basics, Sports Sampler, Stress Much, Talk to the Hands (sign language), Walk n' Talk, Women's Discussion Group and Yoga.
The daily schedule also includes sessions in career and personal development. In both work and play, emphasis on individual instruction. Evenings and weekends include special activities and field trips to various close-by cities. There are also opportunities to meet with TRiO Upward Bound students on other local college campuses.
A Special Note to Parents/Guardians:
Adult supervision exists on a 24 hour basis when TRiO Upward Bound students are in residence during the summer program. Besides the regular staff, the summer staff consists of six instructors, one housing supervisor and six tutor-counselors. The staff assists each student in meeting academic, social or personal needs.
Students are not permitted to be off campus during the summer unless supervised by a TRiO Upward Bound staff member or immediate family member/guardian. Students are also not permitted to be in any other residence hall during the summer program.
