RUSSIAN 101 Russian I (3) - Develops the four language skills and studies elements of Russian culture. Requires practice in the language laboratory. This course satisfies one additional course requirement from the approved list of communication courses for general education requirements/This course counts as a Group A, Humanities and The Arts General Education Requirements. Three hours lecture per week.

RUSSIAN 102 Russian II (3) - Continuation of RUSSIAN 101. This course satisfies one additional course requirement from the approved list of communication courses for general education requirements. This course counts as a Group A, Humanities and The Arts General Education Requirements. Three hours lecture per week. Prerequisite: RUSSIAN 101 or equivalent.

RUSSIAN 203 Intermediate Russian I (3) - Develops further four language skills through extensive and intensive practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Russian language is taught in its cultural contexts, including history, culture, diversity, and comparison with students’ native communication cultures. The course is designed for students seeking General Education Points in Cultures and Diversity and Communication and is conducted in combination of lecture and discussion, and formal and informal oral and written assignments. Applicable toward a minor or a major in Languages and Cultures: Russian and East European Studies Track. Prerequisites: RUSSIAN 102 or equivalent, or permission of the Department. Normally offered once a year.

RUSSIAN 204 Intermediate Russian II (3) - Reinforces and expand the material covered in Russian 203 (Intermediate Russian I) by utilizing a multi-skill approach: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A key objective in this course is to encourage students to speak as much Russian in the classroom as possible. Russian language is taught in its cultural contexts, including history, diversity, literature, visual arts and comparison with students’ native communication strategies and literary and artistic traditions. The course is designed for students seeking General Education Points in Cultures and Diversity, Communication, and Arts and Humanities, and is conducted in combination of lecture and discussion, and formal and informal oral and written assignments. Applicable toward a minor or a major in Languages and Cultures: Russian and East European Studies Track. Prerequisites: RUSSIAN 203 or equivalent, or permission of the Department. Normally offered once a year.

RUSSIAN 305 Russian for Professional Communication I (3) - Develops further four language skills through extensive and intensive practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The course emphasizes professional communication in the fields of business, law, and politics. Russian language is taught in its cultural contexts, including history, culture, diversity, and comparison with students’ native cultures. Applicable toward a major in Languages and Cultures: Russian and East European Studies Track. Prerequisites: RUSSIAN 204 or equivalent, or permission of the Department. Normally offered every other year.

RUSSIAN 306 Russian for Professional Communication (3) - Develops further four language skills through extensive and intensive practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The course emphasizes professional communication in the fields of business, law, politics, and medicine. Russian language is taught in its cultural contexts, including history, culture, diversity, and comparison with students’ native cultures. Applicable toward a major in Languages and Cultures: Russian and East European Studies Track. Prerequisites: RUSSIAN 305 or equivalent, or permission of the Department. Normally offered every other year.

RUSSIAN 211 Russian Culture and Civilization (3) - Presents the history of Russian culture and civilization from its beginnings to the present, with emphasis on art, literature, ideas, historical events, and cultural exchanges. Students gain insights in the cultural history of Russia, including geography, society, politics, philosophy, art, literature, and the sciences. The course is designed for students seeking General Education Points in Arts and Humanities and Communication and is taught in English in combination of lecture and discussion, and formal and informal oral and written assignments. Open to all students and applicable toward a minor or a major in Languages and Cultures: Russian and East European Studies Track. No prerequisites. Normally offered every other year.

RUSSIAN 212 Russian Film, Literature, and Culture (3) - Explores the role of cinema, literature, print and electronic media in shaping society in the Soviet Union and Russia. Along with learning about Soviet and Russian popular culture, students analyze the relationship between media and politics. Special attention will be paid to cinema, television, radio, newspapers, contemporary literary works, and the Internet. The course is designed for students seeking General Education Points in Arts and Humanities and Communication and is taught in English in combination of lecture and discussion, and formal and informal oral and written assignments. Open to all students and applicable toward a minor or a major in Languages and Cultures: Russian and East European Studies Track. No prerequisites. Normally offered every other year.

RUSSIAN 214 East European Film, Literature, and Culture (3) - Explores the role of cinema, literature, print and electronic media in shaping society in East European countries. RUSSIAN 290 Independent Study in Russian (1-9) - Individual study of a particular aspect of Russian civilization, language or literature under faculty supervision. Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor and the chairperson.
